A trader profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of American actions.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the hours before former President Trump declared on Saturday that Maduro had been apprehended.

One account, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But the odds had climbed to 11% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the morning of the next day, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on inside information," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other traders also made significant sums from similar wagers.

Political Attention Emerges

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week would prevent federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the United States, with participants able to bet on everything from sports to political events.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market arena.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
