Crew Member Reveals Depression After ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Months following reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She noted that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
