Harsh Winter Weather Systems Take Five Lives in the Gaza Strip Amidst Desperate Living Situations in Makeshift Camps.

Powerful cold-season gusts brought walls down upon fragile tents housing people displaced by war in Gaza, killing no fewer than 4 people. These deaths underscores the dangerous situation that continue after more than 24 months of intense bombardment and critical lack of aid.

Truce Provides No Relief from Severe Weather

While a truce has been in effect from October, humanitarian organizations state that residents broadly lack the adequate shelter necessary to withstand recurring winter storms.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which took in the victims, said on this week that the dead include a pair of adult females, a girl, and a man.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on the same day that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of extreme cold overnight.

"The world has enabled us to witness death in all its forms," stated a family member following the funeral. "It’s true the bombing may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Tent Collapse

As per the medical center, three people of a one family — elderly a man, his teenage granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an eight-metre tall wall fell onto their dwelling in a coastal area of Gaza City. No fewer than 5 others were hurt in the event.

Family members on that day started clearing the rubble that had entombed their loved ones and rebuilding the temporary homes for survivors.

Humanitarian Distribution and Continuing Emergency

The UN and its humanitarian partners were handing out shelter kits, tarps, warm covers and clothing as well as nutrition and sanitation items across Gaza, said the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

Most of Palestinians reside in improvised tents because their houses were turned into rubble over the course of the war. Humanitarian organizations contend an insufficient amount of building supplies are reaching Gaza during the truce.

Casualty Figures After the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, which is part of the Hamas-run government, reports more than four hundred and forty people have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their bodies taken to hospitals after the truce went into effect. The ministry maintains detailed casualty data that are considered largely accurate by UN agencies and outside analysts.

James Elder, representing the UN children’s agency Unicef, said on that day that at least 100 children under the age of 18 – 60 males and 40 females – had been killed after the truce began due to armed actions, including unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, airstrikes, artillery fire and employment of live ammunition. Those figures, he said, represented cases where enough details had been gathered to warrant recording, but the overall count is believed to be higher. He added that many hundreds of children had been wounded.

"Although 'bombings and shootings have slowed' under the truce, they have not stopped," the spokesperson informed journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video link from Gaza City. "Therefore what the world now terms calm would be viewed as a catastrophe in any other place," he concluded.

Third Cold Season of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of more than two million individuals has been fighting to fend off the cold weather and storms away while facing lack of humanitarian aid and a lack of more substantial temporary housing, which is urgently required during the winter months. It’s the 3rd winter after the war involving Israel and Hamas began on a date in late 2023, when militants stormed into southern Israel and murdered approximately twelve hundred people and took hostage 251 others into Gaza.

The local health authority reports over 71,400 people have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory offensive.
