Israeli citizens commemorate second remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations proceed
People have gathered around the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The violent enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled formal commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still took place across the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to examine the conditions of the agreement.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the negotiations indicated that an evening round of indirect talks began at 7 PM local time.
The source stated the day's discussions finished without significant progress, due to disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not restart fighting after the first phase of the agreement.
He added that the talks are "difficult and have still not achieve any major advancement," but mentioned that facilitators are striving to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Key Points in Talks
- A permanent ceasefire
- The exchange of the prisoners still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance distribution
- After-conflict governance of the territory
Citizen Sentiment
In the city's public square earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling endured the attack on the gathering, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "Nowhere feels like home now and until every captive return not a single person will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everyone home once more, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to heal," she added.
Outside the leader's residence in the capital, people assembled to show their backing for the loved ones of the captives. Israel reports forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.
Protester a participant stated: "We must do every compromise necessary for the abducted to be released. But we really want promises that we will be protected."
Research now frequently demonstrate that approximately seventy percent of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to conclude in exchange for the release of the captives.
Gaza Situation
At the site of the music event, mourners gathered to pay their respects.
From that location, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli attacks continued.
In the main city, attacks were reported in the dawn of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, area and Nasr areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the north-west.
"As the evening arrives, the fear appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.
"We are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, clinging, especially my smallest child who rests his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we look at the reports to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The medical facility in the urban area reported it had taken in the corpses of several people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of that area indicated another two fatalities had been transported. A person was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the southern area, medical staff said.
