The British tennis star secured the biggest win of his career by rallying from a set down to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had earlier beaten Alcaraz on two separate matches, this win represents Norrie's first ever victory over a reigning world No 1.

"Huge. So big for me," said Norrie, who becomes the newest UK male player in history to overcome a top-ranked player. "Coming back from injury last year, I lost in the first round of qualies here. I just tried to embrace my tennis in the latter part of the year. To get a win like this, it's the most significant win of my career, my maiden triumph over the world No 1 and likely the most in-form player in the world right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st globally, also halted Alcaraz's dominant streak of nine finals in a row and 17 consecutive premier event victories, which marked the best series of performances in the Spaniard's early career.

Match Overview

The top seed seemed to be moving confidently towards victory early on as he cruised in the initial stanza. Yet, the British contender steadily battled back back into the game by executing with greater precision and dragging the Spanish opponent into prolonged, demanding points. His unceasing shot tolerance and consistency gradually made an impact.

Through most of the match, Alcaraz performed well on serve but he had difficulty to get his timing right with his rally strokes. The rising talent looked particularly uncomfortable striking his signature shot, which has been the top weapon in the world for much of this season, committing 29 forehand miscues and a total of 54 errors. Opposing him, the British player offered Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, maintaining his consistency, athleticism and power all match while delivering effective serves and picking his spots to force himself forward and strike effectively.

After dealing for months due to a serious arm issue and challenges with his performance, the tennis professional slipped as far down as 91st globally this season. Following appearances in the last eight at Wimbledon and the Roland Garros second week subsequently, this win further underlines the experienced player's development as he attempts to come back to the top 20 and even higher. Alcaraz, despite his incredible accomplishments, is yet to figure out how to produce his best tennis on indoor courts.
