The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
