The Trump movement's most illuminating and distinctive occasions – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of several weeks, the American president began displaying everyone his designs for a lavish reception room double the dimensions than the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the current estimate of casualties due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and rising, and presently a study predicted his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no former commander would have conceived – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom maintain dealings with the government.

As disorienting as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more gradually, through multiple decades rather than months, yet it remains disturbing via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my childhood, as conceptually Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and since the fastest-growing cadre of Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him because they identify as atheists or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is unquestionably absolutely not the story of a mighty king arising; conversely, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to escape undercover officers. The infant develops in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his message is about love for fellow humans, specifically for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, shown by providing food and protecting. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to present the other cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a method to educate the aggressor; his crime policy indicates that whenever a person pilfers your jacket you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.
The obvious and direct reality that the Savior of the gospels requests a type of extreme compassion concentrated on the poor is what has always made Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the populace, but due to its natural unconventionality requiring to be controlled. In the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – Protestantism was so dominant that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Highest Within Us
Hence I have become heartened to observe the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has served as great solace to help build the initiative that has protested openly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged citizens to participate in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags at every demonstration and calls to the finest aspects within national heritage.
We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you welcome them and receive them or not?
America is best defended, to put it differently, through connection to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is most protected by relationship to that which renders it unique and wonderful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In all circumstances does it mean acting as if the worst regarding America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it represents both meekness and conviction, a blend that committed national faithful should embrace.
