The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on target, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

Everton: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
