Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors are granted the right to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the system currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
